FDI IN INDIA:
GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT & CHALLENGES AHEAD
The last two decades of the
20th century witnessed a dramatic world-wide increase in Foreign Direct
Investment (FDI), accompanied by a marked change in the attitude of most
developing countries towards inward FDI. In India this change in mindset
was the result of complex process that was initiated in 1990-91, now
known as economic liberalization program.
The rate at which FDI has grown and come into the country during the
post-liberalization period is a clear indication that India is fast
emerging as an attractive destination for overseas investors. Though
India has one of the most transparent and liberal FDI regimes among the
developing countries with strong macro-economic fundamentals, it share
in FDI inflows is dismally low. The country still suffers from
weaknesses and constraints, in terms of policy and regulatory framework,
severely restricting the inflow of FDI.
This monograph is devoted to an eloquent and analytical study of FDI
trends and policies in India while examining the developments and
controversies (economic and political) relating to the trends in major
sectors like Agriculture, Industry, Infrastructure and retails.
